Menactra is a conjugate vaccine meningococcal vaccine available.  The polysaccharide meningococcal vaccine is suitable for anyone older than 2 years of age. However, it must be given every 3-5 years to maintain immunity to the 4 types of  5 meningococcal bacteria Groups A, C, W135, and Y. (Warning it does not cover Group B which still causes approximately 30% of cases. ) ( Educate yourself, check with your doctor and make an informed choice.)

Prevnar

The vaccine against pneumococcal meningitis is licensed in February 2000 for use at 2, 4, 6, and 12–15 months of age, is now routinely recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Conjugate Vaccine  helps to protect infants and toddlers from invasive pneumococcal diseases, such as bacteremia and meningitis. (Check with your doctor for more information.)

 

The Hib vaccine

Hib stands for Haemophilus influenzae type b.

Hib was given as a single vaccine in 1992 as part of a national campaign and is now given with DTwP - diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) at 2, 3 and 4 months.

Hib vaccine is routinely used in childhood immunization programs in 34 countries including Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and many countries in Western Europe.

Since the vaccine was introduced, Hib disease has virtually disappeared from these countries.
